There are some amazing racing games for the PS2, particularly when combined with a force feedback wheel. The games I most play are TOCA Race Driver 3, Richard Burns Rally and Enthusia.Having recently discovered the joy of widescreen hacks, I've tried using the same techniques to hack some minor improvements to these games:TOCA Race Driver 3An amazing game, with an interesting bug that may have put a lot of people off.
For me, the handling is only great when 'Pro Sim handling' is enabled (Pro Sim damage is also great). Unfortunately, whatever Pro Sim options you select are.never saved. and every time you start up the game they will be de-selected and you'll be back to 'beginner' handling mode. This bug also affected the PC version of this game and was fixed in an official patch.I have therefore created a pnach to force these options on. Code: gametitle=TOCA Race Driver 3comment=Force pro-sim options on//Gravel trapspatch=1,EE,2055BBA8,byte,00000001//Handlingpatch=1,EE,2055BBA0,word,00000001//Damagepatch=1,EE,2055BBA4,short,00000001I've also tried and failed to make a patch to fix the overly-harsh penalty system when qualifying or doing timed laps. That is: if you run off the track, gaining no advantage (or even losing several seconds) the lap time is disqualified.Richard Burns RallyStill the most realistic rally simulator ever made: very challenging but also very rewarding.
This was only released in Europe and Japan. I wanted to play in NTSC, so I picked up the Japanese release (SLPM-66068).I found out that the Japanese version has an Arcade Mode, with easier handling! I don't use it, but interesting that it appears to be an updated version of the PAL release. It also has a widescreen mode, although it's vert- (a proper widescreen pnach is available too).I have patched the whole game (graphics, text, audio) back to English with a pnach (too large to include here, but I'm happy to share). I have also patched out the dated (and IMO unrealistic) 'lens flare' rings near the sun.I've tried and failed to patch the horizontal view in.pit mode to align it to the actual driving position (it's centred by default). This is easily done in the PC and XBOX versions of this game simply by editing a text file, so I'm sure it's doable.EnthusiaAmazing physics in this game - it has a cult following for good reasons! The only problem I have is that the in car view is too low.
When you're up close to the car in front, the view is around bumper height, so you can't see properly. I'd like to increase the height to a more realistic position to make it easier to follow cars closely. I've tried to patch this, but not had any luck (I did manage to raise the height of the whole car, but that has other side effects!).Can you help?Is there anyone out there who has any interest in this?
If you any patching tips/fancy having a go at patching yourself or have suggestions for other improvements, then I'd be very interested to hear.
